Been doin’ meet ‘n greets w/them since arriving at Wakayama, and even then, I still wanna hang for a real long time!

Didja know, Chiefy? Pandas‘re part of the bear family that lives in cold climates, but they don’t hibernate!

Yurr. Since they eat bamboo the whole year ‘round, there wasn’t a need for them to do that.

Bamboo doesn’t have enough calories for them to go into hibernation in the first place—is what the guide Handa-san gave me said.

And, and, they’ve actually got a sixth digit on their paws, like a human thumb. That’s how they keep a tight grip on the bamboo!

I wonder… To me, they seem real laid-back all the time.

The answer is~ 30km per hour¹! Hippos run at around the same speed too~

Really?! That’s so fast… Maybe even faster compared to me riding a bicycle…

Imagining a panda and a hippo running at that speed though, hm… Yeah, can’t see it.

Despite that, there were people who did their best to keep them in this world, little by little. That’s why thanks to their efforts, we can also meet real pandas.
